Background of the Study

Hemorrhagic stroke, resulting from the rupture of blood vessels in the brain, is a life-threatening medical condition that requires immediate medical intervention to prevent long-term neurological damage or death. It is less common than ischemic stroke but tends to be more fatal, with high mortality and morbidity rates (Smith et al., 2023). Hemorrhagic stroke can result from various causes, including hypertension, aneurysms, and head trauma. Effective management of hemorrhagic stroke is crucial and requires rapid assessment, stabilization, and prompt medical treatment, which involves specialized skills and knowledge (Jackson & Peters, 2023).

Nurses, as primary caregivers in acute stroke management, play an essential role in the early detection, monitoring, and management of hemorrhagic stroke patients. Their responsibilities include monitoring vital signs, administering prescribed medications, assisting in diagnostic tests, and providing emotional support to both patients and families. However, studies have shown that nurses may lack adequate knowledge and preparedness in managing such critical cases, which can lead to delayed intervention and suboptimal patient outcomes (Oluwadare et al., 2024).

Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital, located in central Nigeria, serves as a significant healthcare institution, where patients with stroke are treated. However, the level of nurses' preparedness in managing hemorrhagic stroke patients remains a subject of concern. Despite the growing incidence of stroke in Nigeria, there is limited research assessing the preparedness and knowledge of nurses in managing hemorrhagic stroke in Nigerian healthcare settings. Understanding nurses' knowledge and preparedness is vital to improving patient care outcomes and developing targeted training programs to address existing gaps in knowledge and skills.

Statement of the Problem

Effective management of hemorrhagic stroke is vital to improving patient outcomes, but the knowledge and preparedness of nurses in Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital in handling such critical cases is not well documented. Without proper training, nurses may struggle to identify early signs of hemorrhagic stroke, apply appropriate intervention strategies, and provide the necessary support. Delays in treatment and lack of preparedness may result in worsened patient conditions and higher mortality rates. This study seeks to assess the knowledge and preparedness of nurses for managing hemorrhagic stroke patients at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital, identifying gaps that need to be addressed to ensure optimal patient care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of nurses at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital regarding hemorrhagic stroke.
  2. To evaluate the preparedness of nurses in managing hemorrhagic stroke patients at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital.
  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in the management of hemorrhagic stroke patients and propose recommendations for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital regarding hemorrhagic stroke?
  2. How prepared are nurses at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital to manage hemorrhagic stroke patients effectively?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in the management of hemorrhagic stroke patients at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between the level of knowledge of nurses and their preparedness in managing hemorrhagic stroke patients at Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. Nurses who have higher levels of knowledge about hemorrhagic stroke are better prepared to manage patients effectively.
  3. The challenges faced by nurses in managing hemorrhagic stroke patients are significantly related to inadequate training and lack of resources.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nurses working in the neurology and emergency departments of Nasarawa State University Teaching Hospital who are involved in the care of patients with hemorrhagic stroke. The study will not include nurses working in other departments, which limits the generalizability of the findings to the entire hospital.

A limitation of the study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce bias. Additionally, the study will focus exclusively on hemorrhagic stroke and will not address other types of stroke or neurological conditions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Hemorrhagic stroke: A type of stroke caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain, leading to bleeding and possible brain damage.
  • Nurses' knowledge: The understanding nurses have regarding the causes, symptoms, and management of hemorrhagic stroke.
  • Preparedness: The ability of nurses to effectively manage hemorrhagic stroke patients, including their clinical skills, knowledge of protocols, and readiness to act in an emergency.
